Sheffield born, Rachel Modest developed her unique vocal ability within the churches and gospel choirs of her local community. Now based in Leeds she has developed a powerful and soulful vocal style that takes inspiration from artists such as Madeleine Bell, Dee Dee Warwick and Dusty Springfield. Her debut for the label was a cover of the Ben E King classic “I, Who Have Nothing”, which was later followed by an appearance on the debut 45 by The Magnificent Tape Band “Patterns in My Mind” as well as her own solo 45 “I Try/Forbidden Love”, both of which received radio support from the likes of Gilles Peterson (BBC6 Music), Huey Morgan (BBC6 Music/Radio 2) and Lauren Laverne (BBC6 Music).

Recorded in 1972 “Never Did I Stop Loving You” comes from the debut album from Alice Clark, which turned out to be the only full length LP she ever produced and has gone on to become a collector’s item amongst those in the know. “Never Did I Stop Loving You” is one of the finest soul cuts from the early 70s and has been in demand since it was rediscovered by the Acid Jazz scene of the 1990s, being championed by the likes of Mr Scruff, The New Mastersounds and Acid Jazz’s Eddie Pillar.
