[I’ve added this to my collection, too!] Aki Tsuyuko’s “Yang” is wonderful. With its dignified presence and deep, subtle nuances lurking beneath a quiet, humble surface—abstract yet evoking a nostalgic, folk-song-like harmony—this masterpiece captivates the listener with the magical pauses and resonance of the electronic organ, which seem to expand into a “universe of sensation.” Highly recommended.

Since his debut in 1998, he has been a leading figure in the Chicago music scene, releasing albums on Thrill Jockey and Drag City, as well as on Moikai, run by Jim O’Rourke; her collaborations with Tortoise and Mice Parade; and her performances with Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Arto Lindsay, and others. Produced to commemorate the 153rd anniversary of Uji Kōen, a long-established tea wholesaler in Kyoto, this album is the latest installment in the “Tealightsound” project—an endeavor that interprets the essence of “tea” as an “invisible sensory experience” and conveys it through “light” and “sound,” which share similar qualities to that experience. The cover art by Ippei Matsui is also beautiful. Five tracks in total. (Original Japanese text by COMPUMA)
