TURTLE ISLAND's long-awaited best-of album — their finest work yet, 15 tracks in all, including new songs and new arrangements!
This project began at the urging of Personal Energy's Awata, a member of the band and the man behind "Hashi no Shita Power Plant," the solar system that has powered the "Hashi no Shita Music Festival" held annually since 2012. True to its title, LIVE IN TURTLE ISLAND was made with the aim of delivering the very essence of Turtle — that "live" energy, that "sound" that seems to materialize right before your eyes, in short, the "live" experience itself. Staff with long ties to Turtle gathered en masse at Kobe's XEBEC HALL, known as a laboratory for sound, to record and film a live performance with no audience. Spanning 15 tracks, from the new songs "Ekkyo," "Michimichi" and "Kuku Kamigami (New Ver.)" to signature numbers like "SELF NAVIGATION," "Madara de Odore" and "Uchu no Mannaka," the recording keeps a genuine live feel while capturing, in high fidelity, a rawness distinct from studio sound. With mixing by longtime ally Naoyuki Uchida, mastering by Mayo Takise (M's disk) and cutting by Shigeru Takezawa of Nippon Columbia, the craftsmanship of these masters has produced a work that packs in both Turtle's "history" and its "present." In an age when recordings are increasingly digital, this release was conceived with equal care as a physical "object": first issued in autumn 2021 as a limited, deluxe-packaged edition available only through the official site, it now finally gets a nationwide release on February 22, 2022, in a special edition featuring 180g heavyweight vinyl, a specially printed jacket (special silver ink) and a 7-inch-size 54-page booklet!
Turtle Island is no longer just a band — it's a movement, a festival unto itself. Their earthy rhythms set the soul free and leap over every kind of division. Here is the sound we need to survive these chaotic times! Hajime Oishi (writer)
