Self-released in 1994 on Kawahara's own label HMD, the Shou Yin Project was a duo pairing Shanghai-born singer Shou Yin Wu with cyber-occult music master Henry Kawahara, with support from Keisuke Oki, a creator Kawahara trusted. Kawahara handled production, playing guitar, keyboards and programming himself, all in service of Wu's weightless, ethereal vocals. Apart from the lyrics, Kawahara arranged nearly the entire record, which includes pieces written specially for the album, reworkings of his previously released solo material, and covers of Mandarin pop classics. With their cyber-occult sensibility evoking a near-future sci-fi vision of a borderless Asia, these tracks feel like a premonition of the way artists across Asia would connect in the social media era.
