"The Night the Stars Fell" is a journey that begins in a fire-scorched forest. With every fresh gust of wind, the trees groan. Along the way, discovered remnants of the past appear: the crashes and bangs of a decaying house, a chorus of derailed railcars, a shortwave radio ringing out messages amid the static. As the world keeps boiling over, the crickets sing their final song. I search for a sign of hope, but find only darkness.
Ian Wellman's fourth album and his debut for Ash International, 'The Night the Stars Fell' is built from field recordings made in the forests and deserts of Southern California, shortwave radio static recordings, and distortion-laden cassette tape loops. The eleven pieces on the album are shot through with the physicality of the winds that drove the fires that burned the very forests where the sounds were captured. "The Night the Stars Fell" explores a time of rebuilding, a time of searching for a new path.
Ian Wellman is a sound artist currently based in Los Angeles, California. His recordings have been released by Room40, Dragon's Eye Recordings, Luminous Drift, and Industrial Coast. Ian is an IATSE Y-1 craftsman and a member of the Los Angeles-based sound collective VOLUME.
