Clan Caiman, led by Argentine composer Emilio Aro, is an Argentine group, but their timeless, organic music transcends national boundaries. There is a sense of trust in their unpretentious approach—recording among friends and occasionally releasing new work. Their third album, *Pica-Pau* (Woodpecker), is their most abstract and minimalist work to date, yet it is neither cold abstraction nor strict minimalism. As its symbolic title suggests, *Pikapau*—which focuses on rhythm and texture—is warm and hypnotic; despite being produced between 2023 and 2024, it feels as though it has existed for much longer. Like their previous albums *Kaiman-zoku* (2018) and *Asoma* (2021), released on M Records, this work is underpinned by an ensemble featuring the kalimbaphone—a self-tuned percussion instrument created by Aro by modifying a thumb piano. The kalimbaphone’s intensely ethnic patterns weave their way through waves of reverb-drenched lap steel and guitar, while descending bass notes and cymal-free percussion propel the music forward inexorably, like a timeless river. The compositions are largely unified in F-sharp minor and E minor, creating a sense of stepping away from the closed-off, trend-driven urban environment and immersing oneself in the deep, nocturnal world surrounded by life. Like their previous albums, this is an instrumental album, but the final track, “Tulipán Song” (Tulip Song), features their first vocal track. This is a vocal version of the opening track, sung in a language devised by Aro.
