Raised in Iquitos, a town on the banks of the Amazon, he deepened his own sound in an environment where transistor radios beamed in cumbia from Colombia and surrounding regions along with Brazilian carimbó. He began recording in 1962, and records show that—rare for the era—he launched his own label and was even involved in distribution.
His style took the cumbia then in its heyday in Colombia and folded in the psychedelic rock and surf guitar of the day, and it's genuinely astonishing that he built a sound this enduring with nothing but the radio for inspiration. The warm guitar and South American rhythms still sound fresh today. Colombian salsa and cumbia of the same era can sometimes be too rhythmically complex for casual listening rather than dancing, but this Amazonian cumbia/chicha, with its laid-back, cozy guitar tone and vintage feel, has an indescribable old-school living-room charm—there's a humidity to the surf guitar that makes it instantly approachable. It goes great with a drink, and we'd love to hear it played at a good volume in a lounge.
It's appeared on a number of distinguished Latin reissue labels, and now it's reissued by the renowned Vampi! Perfect as an entry point to tropical music / Peruvian music.
