This one's incredible too. Heading south from the coca-leaf cumbia of Colombia, inject some ayahuasca and Peruvian Amazonian cumbia is born. Iquitos, a city on the banks of the Peruvian Amazon, became the hub of something like a scene, and here's the album by its central band, Los Zheros: "Psychedelic Cumbia Party."

Damp surf guitar paired with the percussive rhythms that define this band. There's even a saying that goes, "throw a whole box of '60s surf guitar singles into the Amazon river and Los Zheros come crawling out of the jungle." Formed in '72, they're another standard-bearer of the style. The psych-rock/cumbia classic "CUARTO OSCURO" (sample1) is a progressive, percussive cumbia epic.
