"All Cylinders," the album by Yves Jarvis—one of Canada’s most distinctive musicians, known for his indie rock and contemporary R&B—is now in stock on vinyl. With a sound that’s cutting-edge, innovative, intimate, and highly polished—said to carry on the spirit of the DIY-recorded, idea-packed gem “McCartney II”—this album has turned out to be a true masterpiece. Music from a genius. A vinyl release from “In Real Life Music,” the label that released Erika de Casier’s “Lifetime.” It has also arrived at Newtone.

A truly remarkable album on which he performed all the recordings himself without any guest musicians, stating that “most of it was recorded using Audacity, a free software program with only the bare minimum of features, and without using any plugins.” It feels like an updated take on the innovations of ’70s British rock and psychedelic pop. Officially, he stated, “I listened exclusively to Frank Sinatra for a year,” drawing inspiration from folk, R&B, country, blues, Americana, Serge Gainsbourg, Judy Sil, Sheryl Crow, Captain Beefheart, Jackson Browne, Slobbing Gristle, Ray Charles, Brian Eno, and Fleetwood Mac, among others, and is described as carrying on the spirit of *McCartney II*. While grounded in the essence of musical heritage, the band creates a unique and astonishing world of its own. Including her time with Un Blonde, her career spans 10 years, and this album won the 2025 Best Album award at Canada’s Polaris Music Prize. Personally, as a fan of irregular time signatures, I was immediately drawn to it. I highly recommend it. (Original Japanese text by Saito)
