Kidkanevil, a beatmaker from Leeds, UK, now based in Berlin—an otaku who grew up on video games and anime while loving underground hip-hop—joins forces with Magic Manfred, a multi-instrumentalist wizard with a passion for disco, boogie, funk, and soul. Their collaboration, born from a shared love of 90’s hip-hop, their shared love for ’90s hip-hop—the duo project Above The Clouds presents the title track “One For Detroit” (sample 1), a soulful and beautiful homage to Detroit featuring a cosmic, undulating synth soundscape. Also featured is the exquisite “One For Detroit (14KT Remix)” (sample 2), a gem of a remix by Maestro 14KT, one of the leading figures of the early 2000s Detroit beat scene. The album features three tracks, including “U3P1 (feat. Paolo De Jesus)” (sample 3), which evokes the beatmaking vibe of A Tribe Called Quest’s Ummah era and features a melancholic trumpet arrangement by the masterful Paolo De Jesus—a track that’s especially beautiful at dusk.
