A hidden gem of beautiful, innocent, and sinful folk music, created within a completely closed-off community by Paul Watkins and Brooks Poston, both known as members of the Manson Family.

The year was 1969, when Charles Manson shocked the world with the murder of Sharon Tate—an event that marked the end of the Summer of Love. These two individuals are said to have testified for the prosecution as members of Manson’s cult, revealing the motives behind the killings and the inner workings of “The Family.” Musically, however, they present a stark contrast, performing beautiful, delicate, and melancholic folk rock. Characterized by soft, beautiful vocals, their song “Young Girl” depicts a young girl striving to maintain her innocence amidst the rough waves of adulthood and society. Paul Watkins served as the de facto leader among the remnants of “The Family.” Later, the two formed a band called “Desert Sun” and performed around Death Valley, but they never saw the light of day; Watkins died of leukemia at the young age of 40. I discovered a deadstock copy of this record—originally pressed in 2010 by the label HELTER SKELTER—and added it to my inventory. It’s a single-sided, 7-inch release.
