The Gathering: Roots & Branches of Los Angeles Jazz is a musical project and band founded by Jesse Sharps in October, 2005 with a focus on progressive musicians and music from the Leimert Park and greater Los Angeles region with roots and connections to Horace Tapscott’s Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra and the African American Arts Culture of Los Angeles. The Branches can be seen today spreading out to embrace new players and music as well as represented in the artistry and history being made by the young players from the 2005 session emerging as new stars in their own right.
The one and only CD recording documenting the performances and activities of THE GATHERING, the Black jazz community music collective launched on October 10, 2005 — Thelonious Monk's birthday — in Leimert Park, said to be the heart of Los Angeles' contemporary African-American art scene, centered around JESSE SHARPS, a former member of the PAN-AFRIKAN PEOPLES ARKESTRA, the group led by HORACE TAPSCOTT, the spiritual/free jazz legend active from the '70s into the early '80s, in order to carry on his spirit! Legends such as PHIL RANELIN, RICHARD GRANT, ROBERTO MIRANDA and LEON NDUGU CHANCLER take part, along with many BUILD AN ARK members including DWIGHT TRIBLE, JOEY DOSIK and MIGUEL ATWOOD-FERGUSON, and a young KAMASI WASHINGTON and BRANDON COLEMAN — now flagship names on 〈BRAINFEEDER〉 — are also credited. A document of the century, with 24 musicians carrying the spirituality, history, culture and music of their forebears across the ages and on into the future!
