From NEPPA, a new Oslo-based label—presumably led by PRINS THOMAS—dedicated to unearthing lost rare recordings, bootleg 12-inch records have been circulating, and and has been included on a HUNEE compilation—now, this ultimate South African boogie track, DON LAKA’s 1986 “Stages Of Love,” is finally getting an official reissue! Rather than being at the heart of Johannesburg’s bubblegum scene, he was active in the jazz and funk scenes. Apparently, he’s connected to BAYATE, who was reissued by 〈LA CASA TROPICAL〉. It doesn’t have a strong African flavor; instead, the sophistication of the modern synth funk, combined with the freshness of the vocals and backing vocals, is utterly captivating. PRINS THOMAS’s edit (sample 2) showcases masterful mixing and a steady groove—it’s so well-crafted that it’s actually the one that’s likely to shine on the dance floor. As expected.
