Launched in the early 2000s and long releasing on CD, the label TREADER began reissuing its back catalogue on vinyl in 2018. This is the seventh vinyl release, originally from 2004. A collaboration between SPRING HEEL JACK — the unit of label owners ASHLEY WALES and JOHN COXON (ABOUT GROUP) — and veteran US trumpeter WADADA LEO SMITH. The supporting cast is stellar, too! Exquisite playing that layers sound with great delicacy, as if performing the spaces between the notes as well.
The presence of America's WADADA LEO SMITH — a member of Anthony Braxton's trio and a collaborator with Derek Bailey — is remarkable enough, but that's not all: improv master EVAN PARKER also takes part, along with JOHN EDWARDS, a key figure in London's improvised music scene and the bassist of improv trio N.E.W., frequently talked about around cafeOTO. Rather than each player asserting himself, they place exactly the sound the moment requires, creating a taut, charged performance. And the instant WADADA LEO SMITH's dry trumpet enters is pure goosebumps. A sublime session only masters like these could pull off.
