Up through his previous records his approach leaned heavily toward electronics and dance music, but this one is purely acoustic. Built almost entirely around "voice and guitar," it brings out his real strengths, and honestly we welcome this direction far more than the older material that had people name-checking Four Tet. It's also fitting that it comes on NO FORMAT, the label that presents African music legends like Oumou Sangaré and Ballaké Sissoko in a contemporary light (their titles sell out instantly). The mood is nostalgic, but the lyrics reportedly address current issues like the Brazilian government's destruction of the Amazon rainforest — another trait inherited straight from Tropicália. A great entry point into the acoustic side of Brazilian music, too. Perfect for a chilled-out day off. That said, this grown-up, in-between feel — neither bossa nor folk — and the warm production that belongs to no particular category recalls a certain side of Mocky. Quietly recommended.
