I first learned of this group through a mix CD featuring Brazilian tracks MADLIB once provided to MOCHILLA—a 1968 album by ORQUESTRA AFRO-BRASILEIRA that astonishes with its Afro-Brazilian polyrhythms and powerful basslines. Released by CBS, it appears to be regarded as a classic in Brazil. Formed in 1947, it is reported that the group’s leader, Abigail, died in 1970 due to extreme poverty, though the group itself appears to still be active today. An ensemble featuring Afro-Brazilian percussion and grooves—including Candomblé, a spirit-worshiping music tradition of West African origin brought by colonialism and slavery, and batucada—along with wind instruments.
