A licensed reissue of "Song Of Soweto" (1974), the phantom album left behind by THE MALLORY-HALL BAND, led by AL HALL and CHARLES MALLORY! A project bringing together a total of 12 artists, including pianist KIRK LIGHTSEY, known as one of CHET BAKER's great sidemen, and RUDOLPH JOHNSON, a tenor saxophonist who ranks among black jazz's finest! Recorded in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1974 at the height of apartheid, this album blends the funky soul jazz sound that flourished in the 1970s with Latin elegance and the buoyancy of South African township jazz. Led by the album opener "The Last Special" (sample1), driven by a gentle flute, it feels more modern than the more big band–oriented first album.
