ESA PETHMAN, the legendary alto/tenor saxophonist and flutist, was one of the key figures of 1960s modern Finnish jazz. His album "The Modern Sound Of Finland" was Finland's first modern jazz LP, and his composition "The Flame" is an eternal modern Finnish jazz standard — an evergreen said to be the very symbol of Finnish modern jazz. In 1967 he was invited to Belgium, where he cut session recordings of two of his signature pieces, "The Flame" and "Like Steel," with local musicians at Decca's Brussels recording studio. These precious, completely unreleased recordings now appear on 7-inch for the first time!!! The A-side "The Flame" (sample1) has a Dave Brubeck "Take Five" feel, but with a flute-led melody that gives it an irresistibly exotic flavor — seriously cool stuff. The B-side "Like Steel" (sample2), a sharp, sparking modern jazz gem, is a nice one too. (Original Japanese text by COMPUMA)
