A Belgian composer and vibraphonist. In 1978, Guy Cabay, deeply influenced by Brazilian music, released his debut solo album centered on bossa nova and sung in Walloon (the dialect of Belgium's Wallonia region and parts of northern France). His skills as a singer, composer and arranger were so highly regarded that Chet Baker himself called him "the João Gilberto of Belgium." He also earned acclaim as a jazz musician, having been voted Belgium's best vibraphonist, and he reportedly remains energetically active today while teaching at a music conservatory. Many in Japan likely first discovered him through the wonderful 2012 reissue on Production Dessinee. From A4 "Li sabat d'sinte mére l'oto" (sample_1), with its saudade-drenched melody, flute and unique children's call-and-response, to B2 "Les d'mey dous de coste del mouse" (sample_3), whose distinctive electric piano tone is utterly addictive — these are rustic yet strange, still utterly one-of-a-kind recordings.
