A playlist featuring a psychedelic selection of Japanese folk music from the 1970s—in the broadest sense—that sets itself apart from the folk music of the 1960s, which had strong protest song undertones. You can fully appreciate the appeal of folk music as it evolved—drawing on the US ’60s sounds of The Byrds, The Beach Boys, and Buffalo Springfield, which were transformed by psychedelic influences, as well as the trends of soft rock and the Flower Power movement—all set against a backdrop of mature arrangements and studio work. It features Happy End’s masterpiece “Gathering the Wind,” tracks from Hiroki Tamaki’s album *Poem of Existence*—influenced by Indian mysticism—Takashi Nishioka’s “The Tree of Fullness,” Ken Narita’s “The Tree of Full Capacity,” “Alone” from “Heavy Way” by “Ninngashi”—the ultimate rare, independently produced Japanese album set for a standalone reissue—as well as “Firefly,” unreleased material by Akai Tori (the predecessor to the Hi-Fi Set), and “Melted Glass Box” and “Paper Balloon.” There are hardcore diggers in every genre of music, unearthing the surprises that music has to offer.
