Izumi "Mimi" Kobayashi, the legendary keyboardist who wrote and composed "Ram's Love Song"—the theme song for *Urusei Yatsura* and a masterpiece that shines in the history of Japanese anime songs—and released numerous classic Latin jazz fusion albums from the late ’70s through the early ’80s. Having lived in the UK since 1984, she has now re-recorded her own song “Lazy Love” (1981) with the Tokyo Riddim Band, led by DJ/producer Kay Suzuki, founder of *Time Capsule*! The original is a popular track from the acclaimed album *Coconuts High* (’81), which still commands high prices among collectors today. For this new recording, Prince Fatty—a sound wizard who masterfully utilizes vintage analog gear and continues to command immense respect from the global reggae scene for his rock-solid sound production—handled the recording, mixing, and the B-side dub, just as he did on the previous release. The B-side centers on minimalist vocals layered with sirens and analog echo, and the addition of a tempo-slowed-down outro in the latter half of the track enhances the deep, immersive trip-like atmosphere, resulting in a truly superb version. It’s so good that I’ll go ahead and label it (sample_1). Shifting the mood from the original soft “Lovers” duet with a female vocalist, the newly recorded A-side track “Lazy Love” (sample_2)—featuring UK-based Jamaican singer Ras Tavaris for a sweeter vocal interplay—showcases a sophisticated update with a roots reggae lean. I’m blown away by Kay Suzuki’s use of the siren—it sounds exactly where you want it to. Highly recommended!
