She became a household name in the Netherlands with her 2018 debut, but never settled into city life, so she returned to her hometown of Westmalle and now runs a farm called De Paardebloemhoeve. That nature-surrounded environment became the inspiration for 'slapen onder een hunebed,' the previous album that made her name known even in Japan, and marked the birth of CATBUG, a new organic folk artist out of the Netherlands.
The theme of this long-awaited new album is "a hymn to all the birds of the farm and its surroundings." One winter day in 2021, CATBUG was given a pair of binoculars and began observing the birds on and around the farm. Before long she could distinguish the characteristic calls and flight patterns of various species, and started to discover a separate story in each bird. She found something in the birds she could relate to, and wanted to map it out — hence the idea for an album gathering the songs of birds.
Simple songs and guitar, yet astonishingly varied. There's none of the cheapness of leaning on mood or "organic" texture alone; it's perfect for ambient ears, of course, but it never falls back on the obvious synth choices, instead deepening steadily as the album goes on. You feel both the finesse of the production and, simply, real talent. Truly wonderful. Perfect for winding down quietly at home after the party. Now that it's turned cold, this fits all too well.
