This compilation features the music that has defined the “Picó”—a mobile street sound system that has been a fixture in Cartagena and Barranquilla in northern Colombia for decades. Originating in working-class neighborhoods along the Caribbean coast, “Picó” serves not only as a platform for musical expression but also as a hub for resistance movements and local communities, playing a symbolic role in shaping identity. The compilation features rare records brought in via ports from Africa and the Caribbean, as well as Colombian champeta and cumbia, Nigerian highlife, Congolese soukous, South African mbakanga, and Caribbean genres such as zouk and soca. These sounds have transformed street corners, markets, and terraces into vibrant dance floors. The set also features tracks with electronic arrangements, primarily based on recordings from the 1970s.
