Two members of Hiatus Kaiyote—bassist Paul Bender and keyboardist Simon Mavin—have formed a sensual, smooth jazz, tropical, romantic, and relaxing instrumental R&B jazz trio. Conceived as a soundtrack for a fictional supermarket, the album reinterprets Hiatus Kaiyote classics such as A1 “Get Sun” (sample 1), B1 “Make Friends,” B3 “Red Room,” and B4 “Nakamarra” (sample 3), moving through neo-soul, hip-hop beatmaking and arrangements, and avant-garde progressive R&B, while reconstructing the melodies in a mellow style with smooth jazz, bossa nova, tropical, romantic, and relaxing instrumental arrangements. While this is clearly a deliberate choice, it’s incredibly pleasant, and every single track is fantastic in its own right. It’s also absolutely perfect as background music.
