After the acclaimed 'No Broken Hearts on the Factory Floor' (2015), Tapes devoted himself to Rezzett, and following a winding road he finally delivered this tune: "Summer Jam" (2020). In a world blanketed in a near-future dystopian mood, he deliberately took on the challenge of writing using major chords only, and the result radiates a euphoria that borders on the uncanny — his own distinctly critical stance toward (easy) darkness. Ears accustomed to the warped, contrarian electronics of the Rezzett records (〈also unbeatable〉) may be thrown by the abundance of sustained whole-note chords here, but at the two break moments you'll come face to face with a musical miracle you'd almost forgotten. It's melodic and pop yet never slips into easy listening, thanks to the skill of a producer who has spent years chasing bass music. A cheerful yet serious provocation that asks about the 〈something primal〉 that electronic music is forced to leave behind the more it evolves into a complex art form.
The 2025 edition's flip features the legendary 2019 live session with his close ally 7FO. With 7FO's unmistakably Japanese, gloriously lo-tech guitar solo out front, "Summer Jam" reaches its joyous conclusion!
