I never dreamed that in the 2020s I’d get to hear an unreleased Tribe album. A long-lost collection—including “Farewell To The Welfare,” originally released as a 7-inch in 1975—has been discovered in album form. Not only does the title track—arguably the quintessential example of Tribe funk (and featuring a different mix from the 7-inch version!)—shine, but Harrison’s signature compositions, such as “Where Am I” and “Tons And Tons Of B.S.”—which were later re-recorded—also come to life with striking clarity within the album’s cohesive concept. This is the greatest discovery in the history of independent Black jazz.
