The cassette label 〈Matsunomi to Sensu〉, run by DJ Sinkichi—one of the key pioneers of the Kyoto scene—has a new release. It features Sinkichi and CazU-23, the guitarist from Turtle Island.

This is the debut collaboration between CazU-23, a guitarist from Turtle Island, originally from Machida but now based in Nagoya, and Sinkichi, an ambient DJ whose roots are deeply planted in the outskirts of Kyoto, weaving ethereal soundscapes.
The first sonic exchange between these two artists has now come to fruition, encapsulated in a magnetic tape here.
The story takes place on July 16, 2024, during the intense heat of the Gion Matsuri festival. On an afternoon when even the wind in Shimogamo had stilled, CazU-23, with a gift of Ise lobster crackers, knocked on the door of Softribe Studio in Ima De Gawa. Without formalities or a set agenda, the door opened to an unfettered exchange of sound.
Sinkichi, using modular synths from Mutable Instruments, Makenoise, SDKC Instruments Helical, and others of his own construction, weaved together his sonic landscape. CazU-23, with his 70s Teisco guitar, guided by pedals from Chase Bliss, Soma Laboratory, Sonic Ware, Dightech, and more, offered his own unique voice.
Their improvisation, which lasted for roughly six continuous hours, evolved into a stream of sound, and from the eight tracks recorded by KND, the sound engineer of Softribe, five were carefully selected and later reworked, taking on a new life.
CazU-23 layered his guitar with monophonic synthesizers, while Sinkichi interwove soundscapes of collected sounds from the back alleys of Kyoto and the foot of the Higashiyama mountains.
The final mix, completed at Koza Bc Street Studio in Ichijoji, was enriched with the resonance of Buchla synthesizers, the warmth and fluctuation of magnetic tape, and a soft, mist-like texture that gently enveloped the sonic space. Eventually, this sound transformed into a quiet “galaxy” in its own right.
This work is dedicated to the late, legendary ambient DJ, OPERON. His influence is immeasurable, and his presence quietly breathes through this sonic universe.
Born from Ima De Gawa, this is the humble yet endless beginning of a sound galaxy—its journey, infinite.

Joining us this time from Nagoya is guitarist CazU-23 of Turtle Island, who grew up in Machida in the province of Musashi.
And DJ Sinkichi, who lives a humble life on the outskirts of Kyoto and weaves the ethereal sounds of ambient music.
The musical bond these two first forged has now come to fruition as a single magnetic disc.
The date was July 16, Reiwa 6 (2024). The location was Demachiyanagi in Imadegawa.
It was the height of the sweltering heat of the Gion Festival, a late afternoon when even the breeze from Shimogamo had died down. CazU-23, bearing a gift of spiny lobster crackers, knocked on the door of Softribe Studio. Without any formalities, a spontaneous musical conversation began.
Sinkichi operated a modular setup he had assembled by hand, featuring Mutable Instruments, Makenoise, SDKC Instruments Helical, and more.
Meanwhile, CazU-23 utilized a variety of gear from Chase Bliss, Soma Laboratory, Sonic Ware, and DigiTech. With multiple pedals strung together, he plucks a 1970s Teisco guitar.
Their spontaneous, improvisational interplay continues for nearly half a day, like the ceaseless flow of water from a spring.
Standing nearby was KND, the sound engineer from Softribe. Of the eight tracks recorded, five were carefully selected to be preserved, each destined to be imbued with new life.
CazU-23 layered guitar and monosynth sounds seven or eight times over, while Sinkichi wove in soundscapes collected from the back alleys of central Kyoto to the foothills of Higashiyama.
Finally, the mixdown takes place at Koza Bc Street Studio in Ichijoji. Amid the resonance of the Buchla synthesizer, the warmth and fluctuation of magnetic tape are added, and a mist of granular synthesis gently envelops the soundscape. Eventually, it sublimates into a quiet “galaxy.”
This work is dedicated to the late, one-of-a-kind ambient DJ OPERON, who brought CazU-23 and Sinkichi together.
The magnitude of the waves he sent out is immeasurable, and his spirit quietly lives on in this sonic universe.
