The third album by Oker—an organic, experimental acoustic quartet comprised of musicians active in the Nordic improvisational and contemporary music scenes—has been released by the Belgian experimental music label *Aspen Edities*. The album features two long-form pieces created entirely through improvisation, shaped by the group’s unique acoustic soundscape developed over many years of touring. Inspired by meteorological and astronomical phenomena, these works explore how closely sound can approach nature, presenting ever-shifting soundscapes reminiscent of light, wind, and the movement of the tides.

This group, which has long pursued a unique approach that bridges free improvisation and sonic exploration, has shifted from its previous style—which blended composition and improvisation—to a highly pure, fully improvised approach on this album. The organic sound—a tension between sonic stoicism and minimalism that embraces the chaos of improvisation—is born from an ensemble consisting of trumpet, double bass, 6-string and 12-string acoustic guitars, and drums/percussion. Their interest in natural phenomena is evident in titles such as “Equinoctial Tide” and “Crepuscular Rays.” Their approach—not merely “depicting” phenomena like wind, light, and tidal currents, but “reproducing them as behaviors”—is also fascinating.
