Debris’—a band that created psychedelic, chaotic oddities through a strange balance of avant-rock infused with the primal energy of garage punk and Dadaism—came to an end in their hometown of Oklahoma while remaining unknown. Colored by analog synthesizers and electronic effects—and even featuring the sound of a power saw—their music is imbued with an outsider sensibility reminiscent of Captain Beefheart. “When a local studio offered a package deal consisting of ‘10 hours of recording and mixing + a press run of 1,000 LPs + a two-color jacket,’ Debris’ entered the studio fully rehearsed and recorded all 11 tracks in a single take.” This album is a distillation of impulse and avant-garde experimental spirit. Released as a self-produced album, this self-titled work later became a collector’s item and a cult classic listed on the NWW. The nonsensical wordplay in the individual member credits—such as “consecutive screams and magnificent moans,” “viscera-direct vocals and gorgeous growls,” “a variable multi-string electronic irritation generator equipped with various electronic special operations devices,” and “varicose-vein-like verbalization and hideous moans”—is also entertaining.
