Meitei—whose style involves deconstructing traditional Japanese culture and landscapes through the use of sampling techniques, and who has garnered a large following both in Japan and abroad—is releasing a new album on their home label, KITCHEN. LABEL! As the title—inspired by the mineral “agate”—suggests, this is a fascinating album that incorporates ideas accumulated over long tours and the creative process, as well as a patient approach, into existing tracks. In addition to his signature collage technique, the sound design—refined from flashes of inspiration—features new ways of playing traditional instruments and rhythms that are percussive yet uniquely his own. If his previous work was a reflection on a forgotten era, this new album explores and creates what lies beneath it.
