A band whose deafening noise left every fan with permanent hearing damage, after which no one ever spoke of them again.
Formed in 1993 in the desolate suburban city of San Jose, California, Super Static Fever performed live only a handful of times during their brief two-year career. However, at those shows, they stacked multiple Marshall amps on top of each other, unleashed a wall of roaring, wah-infused distortion, and pounded the audience with such ferocious sound pressure that it left them with ringing ears.
Their sound blended heavy sludge reminiscent of the Melvins, Swervedriver’s melodic, roaring guitars, and the “loudness is justice” aesthetic characteristic of late-period Black Flag—all blended together to create a sound that felt as though you were listening through the stock car stereo of a 1985 Ford Econoline, with the interior filled to the brim with marijuana smoke.
Twenty-five years after the band’s breakup, all that remained were unfinished tapes from two ear-shattering recording sessions. For this reissue, the band set a single condition: “Steve Albini must handle the mixing.” Under that condition, this recording has finally seen the light of day.
The packaging exudes the DIY aesthetic of the early 1990s computer era to the fullest. It features a visual style reminiscent of a smudged VHS tape, combined with a design created by screen-printing opaque white ink onto chipboard.
A record that barely exists in this world—and one that, perhaps, should never have existed at all.
