Danny Garcia, a pro skater who epitomized Southern California skate culture from the '90s through the 2000s, shifted his focus to music with the project Reverend Baron — an acoustic instrumental record with a warm, dreamy sound that moves freely between folk, soul, and psychedelic rock.

The star of the album is the Mexican-made guitar Garcia has played since childhood, handed down from his father and grandfather. You can hear echoes of Antonio Bribiesca and Luiz Bonfa, yet the playing never gets caught up in technique; the sound shimmers like a mirage, with a home-recorded texture layered in tape hiss. Much like Tommy Guerrero, another artist who moved from skateboarding to music, there's a distinctive, feel-good sense of relaxation here. Perfect company for the scorching heat.
