Track List
The RAH Band was formed by Richard Anthony Hewson (RAH) in 1977, and launched with ‘The Crunch’, a strange compelling instrumental which was a mixture of glam stomp, space age jazz and futuristic pop that was recorded DIY style in his bedroom.
The single reached No.6 in the UK singles chart and launched a career that has spanned 25 studio and compilation albums and over 40 singles, enjoying chart and sales success in both the UK and a number of overseas territories.
Richard Hewson is still recording today and this collection of his recordings covering the period 1977-1984 maps his illustrious beginnings and reveal a singular talent able to filter jazz and jazz funk through pop to both creative and commercial effect.

The Rah Band is a synth-pop group led by Richard Anthony Hewson, a renowned British producer, arranger, and musician known for his work on The Beatles’ arrangements, his contributions to many classic albums by artists such as Herbie Hancock and James Taylor, and a wide range of projects—including collaborations with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The band’s name—which evokes Sun Ra’s God Ra and the mythical continent of Mu—is derived from the initials of his name: R.A.H. Formed in 1976, this is their third album, *Going Up*, released in 1983. Two lovers telepathically sense messages from the stars and race through the cosmos amid the glittering sounds of synthesizers. The opening track, “Messages From The Stars,” immediately draws you into their world. “Perfumed Garden”—a cover of CHIEKO BEAUTY’s song that has been beloved by many—draws inspiration from *The Perfumed Garden*, a classic Arabic text, and portrays a fantastical, mysterious nocturnal world. Synth-pop, jazz fusion, galactic sounds, Brazilian influences, a ’90s cosmic vibe—and even a touch of kitsch—all contribute to the charm of this exotic pop. The synthesizer work is superb, and LIZ’s vocals are a highlight. A great album. (Original Japanese text by Saito)
