Supervised by Mexico-based next-generation DJ/producer ROSA PISTOLA (Eck Echo/La Chekera), the compilation “Dioses Tribales”—bringing together leading artists from the Mexican Tribal scene—is here! Amid a flood of US house and techno, this genre emerged from the convergence of two forces: the early 2000s movement to establish a uniquely Mexican sound, and the enduring presence of indigenous Mexican music—played on traditional instruments like pan flutes and shakers—that filled the streets. The track that can be considered the genesis of this genre is “Danza Azteca” by pioneer Ricardo Reyna, and this compilation also kicks off with its sequel, “Danza Azteca II” (sample 1). Centered around a four-on-the-floor kick drum, this track—which could be considered the very definition of the genre—is enriched with shamanic vocal chants, intense percussion, and a bassline brimming with a sense of urgency and drive. From that track to “Ela Toma”—an electrified tech-tribal track by FREEBOT, who carries on that legacy while leading the contemporary scene—this is a monumental masterpiece that encapsulates the past, present, and future of Mexican music and its rivals!
