Marva Whitney, a female vocalist who had been performing with James Brown’s band since the late 1960s—long before Lyn Collins, Vicki Anderson, and others. A 7-inch single featuring her classic tracks—known as “Soul Sister #1” and beloved as sampling sources by numerous hip-hop artists such as Public Enemy and N.W.A.—is now available, with one song per side!
Marva Whitney, who supported the James Brown band as the most “raw” and “brassy” diva—a voice that paired perfectly with brass sounds. The A-side, “Unwind Yourself,” is a genuine, raw funk-breaking classic that’s been sampled by DJ KOOL and others, including The 45King on “The 900 Number.” The laid-back, playful horn intro is irresistible! The B-side features the JB-produced, top-notch “sister funk” track “What Do I Have To Do To Prove My Love to You,” the original version of which is considered extremely rare!
