C.A.N.V.A.S., which has staged events alongside Thirtythree Thirtythree — the up-and-coming label/promoter behind MODE FESTIVAL curated by Ryuichi Sakamoto, an event series named JAPAN/LONDON featuring Keiji Haino and Ryuichi Sakamoto, and collaborations with DOMMUNE — launched its own label in 2018. This is the label's first compilation, gathering the artists it has worked with up to now. BOOMKAT compared it to PAN's various-artists set "Mono No Aware," but this is a more experimental, minimal affair. With occasional oriental tones, club-ready cuts driven by solid bass, and primitive pieces built from acoustic-instrument drones and voices, it's a conceptual work blending nationalities and musical styles alike — a project well worth keeping an eye on.
