The third album from Leandro, a maverick talent who studied under Marco Antônio of UAKTI, the handmade-instrument collective from Minas, Brazil. He builds his own original instruments and has brought the traditional songs of the Black culture of Minas Gerais back to life for the present day. Handling the self-made instruments pictured on the jacket as if by magic, he conjures up quiet, minimal, organic ensembles. Try listening in all sorts of settings — a curious set of instrumentals in which the acoustic space and the layers of timbre from these homemade instruments shift with time and place. The gentle tones and the spacing of the self-built instruments are simply sublime... and underneath, the organic, natural resonance of Minas music runs like a clear stream. A singular record that lets you feel the depth of Brazilian/Minas music. Incidentally, we used a track from Marimbaia, his second album aiming at a fusion of marimba and Bahian music, on the Voodoohop podcast. It works beautifully as unusual ambient too, and of course comes recommended for DJs. For dance music fans, Milton Nascimento may be the name that comes to mind for Minas music, but here is Minas music in its ongoing, present-tense form.
