The A-side opens with the strangely titled "Shock & Awe" (sample1), which seems to mock the strategy of the same name derived from the Iraq military campaign, a theme raised by ANDRÉ BAUM, whose work is built around expressing the sorrow of present-day conflict and bridging the people caught up in it; alongside slow-techno-to-IDM cuts such as "Cousin Itt" (sample2) and the dreamy breaks of "The Spinning," which brings 〈REPHLEX〉 to mind — three tracks in all. On the flip, maverick RICARDO VILLALOBOS unleashes improvisational modular work on "Shock & Awe (Ricardo Villalobos Remix)" (sample3), an electro-meets-breakbeat rework that also nods to the Kraftwerk-influenced original — included in full!
