Led by Marc Orandell—one of the unsung godfathers of the global independent label scene—Aksak Mabour’s third album, their first in 40 years, is a two-disc set featuring 22 tracks.

From MOCKY and Takeo Toyama to JOSEPHINE FOSTER, the domestic label WINDBELL—which teaches us about music through poetic lyrics regardless of trends—has released a 2020 album that, surprisingly, is a new work by AKSAK MABOUL! Tracks from their debut album have appeared in various mixes, and every track is a classic—yet from the industry’s perspective, were they buried in a sea of archives, much like SPINETTA? I’ve taken the liberty of interpreting this as: “Was now the time for understanding and liberation?” It’s fascinating that this is the band of Marc Hollander—founder of Belgium’s Crammed Disc, a label that, while serving as the epicenter of so-called “world music,” constantly stands on the outside, viewing it from a critical yet loving perspective. Featuring Fred Frith and others from the Henry Cow circle, as well as high-caliber pop artisans like Léticia Sadir and Julien Gasc from the Stereolab scene. I used to think progressive rock and spoken word were things of the past, but no, that’s not the case at all. It’s the elegant play, singing, and performance of grown-ups. It’s the best. The liner notes by Shinya Matsuyama and “Marc Hollander Tells the Aksak Mabour Story” are also must-reads. The text by WINDBELL on its own page feels like a work of art in itself, so please enjoy the whole package. (Original Japanese text by Shhhhh)
