R.I.P. JON HASSELL—one of the absolute legends among legends of the “Fourth World,” a pivotal figure in the history of modern music who is currently enjoying a massive resurgence in the club scene—has released the second installment in his “Seeing Through Sound” series, a year after the first album and his first release in nine years!!! As expected. Once again, what exactly is the source of this one-of-a-kind, dangerous, and mysterious atmosphere, worldview, and cool sensibility? This album continues to push the boundaries and forge ahead. Highly recommended.

Not to mention the 1981 African collage masterpiece *My Life Is a Bush of Ghosts* by Brian Eno and David Byrne, this album also served as a catalyst for the emergence of a new form of urban music, as it hybridized elements of world music—including those from Africa, Brazil, Southeast Asia—musical worlds that were unknown at the time—were hybridized into genres such as rock and jazz fusion, paving the way for the birth of new urban music. Known for his 1980 landmark album *The Pulse of the Fourth World*, John Hassell—one of the most important musicians in the history of modern music, who is currently enjoying a massive resurgence in the club scene—has released “Seeing Through Sound (Pentimento Volume Two),” the second installment and follow-up to his 2019 masterpiece “Seeing Through Sound” (his first release in nine years), one year after the first volume. This release, of course, comes via NDEYA, the new label he founded himself. Both the vinyl and CD editions feature a total of eight tracks plus a download code. Hassel, who continues to challenge infinite possibilities by repeatedly deconstructing, reconstructing, and fusing all forms of music, reflects painterly techniques from oil painting into his production and arrangements on this album. He deconstructs textures by layering sounds upon sounds, gradually revealing the track’s skeletal structure through meticulously timed arrangements. Forty years after the release of *Fourth World*, even to the ears of 2020—having experienced a wide variety of musical styles—this work sounds not the least bit dated or stale. Far from merely “learning from the past to understand the present,” it embodies and proposes a constantly deepening and evolving sense of the times and the future—a supreme soundscape unique to JON HASELL that can only be described as breathtaking. An art-avant-garde worldview and atmosphere—a sampling collage, beatmaking, ambient, dub, jazz, techno? It’s incredible. Elegance and persuasiveness. Please take a look at the tracklist as well. I highly recommend this album. (Original Japanese text by COMPUMA)
