Kamasi Washington — the saxophonist who stands as a symbol of the new-generation jazz golden age, continually expanding what jazz can be and radiating a truly singular presence — sees his first-ever film score work, "Becoming," finally released on CD/LP!!! A wonderfully pleasant masterpiece through which a clear West Coast jazz breeze blows. Nothing but great tunes. Fifteen tracks that feel perfectly, comfortably right even as background music. Highly recommended.

This album collects 15 tracks in total, comprising newly written pieces and re-recorded versions of past compositions created for the documentary film directed by Nadia Hallgren, released on Netflix in May 2020, which followed former First Lady Michelle Obama up close. Kamasi composed and produced every track, joined by familiar faces including his Next Step cohorts Ryan Porter, Miles Mosley, Cameron Graves and Tony Austin along with his father Rickey Washington, plus trumpeter Dontae Winslow (a sideman for D'Angelo, Jill Scott and Lauryn Hill), acclaimed New York contemporary improviser Sean Sonderegger, and seasoned LA player Kenneth Crouch. The result is a record full of superb performances, where simple themes and melodies glisten beautifully as West Coast jazz breezes refreshingly by. (Original Japanese text by COMPUMA)
