Since last April, Mitsume have been putting out a steady stream of digital releases, followed in the fall by the 12-inch single "Tonic Love (tofubeats remix)," and this year saw the arrival of "VI (Six)," their first album in two years — the pace of their activity is only picking up.
The A-side features "Basic feat. STUTS," recorded by the five of them together with STUTS, the wildly in-demand track maker/producer and all-around talent. Bittersweet melodies and meticulous arrangement meet STUTS's beat on a lead track that marks new territory for Mitsume. The B-side carries "Jinx," released last year as a digital single and left off the new album. A Stop Making Sense homage? Guided by the rhythm of a vintage drum machine sounded through the legendary Densuke recorder, Side-B "Jinx" (sample 2) is a distinctly Mitsume mid-tempo funky studio session cut, and it's plenty cool too.
