Extra Soul Perception
- Cat No: ESP005
- updated:2022-07-22
In November 2019, eight up-and-coming artists from Kenya, Uganda and the UK spent a week in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi collaborating and jamming together as the "Extra Soul Perception" project. Now, with five more new members added, the album they spent three years painstakingly completing remotely amid the pandemic and worldwide lockdowns is finally here — released as a 2LP! Gatefold sleeve. Highly recommended.

This growing collective features original members Faizal Mostrixx (UG), Hibotep (UG), K15 (UK), Karun (KE), Labdi (KE), Lex Amor (UK), Linda Dawn (UK) and Maxwell Owen (UK), plus five new additions: Itsmdnyt (UG), XL Middleton (US), Xenia Menasseh (KE), Sola (UK) and Azu Tiwaline (TUN) — making for an ambitious collaborative project bringing together 13 sharp artists, each an innovator in their own field. Begun at a writing camp in Nairobi and taking three years to complete, these 12 tracks feel like a proposal of new possibilities for collaboration forged during the global lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. Fresh, endearing gems of African R&B, soulful electronic crossover beatdown collaboration. Every track is ambitious in the way only the EXTRA SOUL PERCEPTION project could be, offering a comfort that seems to capture soul in the spiritual sense while hinting at new currents and territories. The long-awaited full album!!! (Original Japanese text by COMPUMA)
