She began her solo career in 2013, and this *Kuma-chan Seal* marks her first CD/LP album. With all tracks composed and produced by Ojima herself—and crafted with the support of Le Makeup and Takao—the collection represents a major step forward and a significant leap in her artistic development. Centered on Ojima’s signature DIY sound, the album features Le Makeup’s vivid and colorful guitar work and sound design, along with Takao’s ambient pop synths and keyboards, allowing listeners to savor layers of sound where raw lo-fi elements and sophisticated hi-fi elements dynamically intertwine. Le Makeup handled the mixing for 10 of the 11 tracks, while Takao took charge of “CHINA Sandoichi.” At the core of Ojima’s musical identity is her crystalline voice; while her pure vocals are featured on every track except the instrumental “Lighting a Fire in a Canoe,” only half of the tracks include lyrics. Throughout the album, her wordless vocals are used as elements of melody and texture. *Kuma-chan Seal* could be described as bedroom pop filtered through techno, ambient, and the New Age revival; however, the album showcases Ojima’s unique worldview—which breaks away from convention—in two tracks: the “home disco” track “Atsumono” (sample_3), featured toward the end of the album, which layers distorted sounds over a four-on-the-floor beat, and the doo-wop-flavored pseudo-reggae track “TINYCELL” (sample_3)—which is somewhat reminiscent of the British singer Brenda Ray—showcase Ojima’s unique worldview that defies conventional expectations.
