ALBERT AYLER, one of the key figures in 1960s free jazz, has had his first album after switching labels—an album often hailed as his greatest masterpiece on Impulse!—reissued! The opening track, “For John Coltrane,” dedicated to Coltrane, features a contemplative 13-minute solo on the alto saxophone. And the improvisation in the latter half of “Truth Is Marching In”—a piece inspired by New Orleans marching bands—explodes into a frenzy with the six-piece ensemble and is simply breathtaking.
