Starting out in 1966 under a name taken from the William S. Burroughs novel, Soft Machine featured a young Robert Wyatt and Daevid Allen, along with legends like Hugh Hopper, Kevin Ayers and Mike Ratledge. Members came and went, the name changed along the way, and today the legendary group carries on once again as SOFT MACHINE. The current lineup centers on guitarist John Etheridge and veteran Canterbury scene saxophonist Theo Travis, joined by bassist Fred Thelonious Baker, who also played in Harry Beckett's band, and drummer Asaf Sirkis. The A-side is a cover of Harry Beckett's composition "The Dew at Dawn," a jazzy, mellow tune with a Caribbean, reggae-tinged feel. A light groove with wonderful playing all around that slowly sinks in. A great track. The B-side is a re-recording of Mike Ratledge's classic "(Slightly) Slightly All The Time" from SOFT MACHINE's masterpiece THIRD. Also superb.
