A superb record from percussionist JOÃO PAIS FILIPE, whose remarkable talent has shone through in his self-taught approach to improvised drumming and in collaborations with rhythm master BURNT FRIEDMAN. Recorded at the "Membrana" exhibition held in a church in northern Portugal. Experiments in odd meters — 18/16, 19/16, 23/16 — plus a newly introduced technique he calls "omission." It may sound daunting on paper, but despite being solo drumming, the record captures rich timbres and a vivid sense of presence. Recommended. (Original Japanese text by Akie)
