From Melbourne, a city you can't take your eyes off, which in recent years has produced no shortage of session bands playing everything from crossover and neo-soul/jazz to cinematic jazz-funk with their own unique twist, keyboardist/composer Finn Rees makes his solo debut. The label itself has praised this record's sensibility as one filtered through Alice Coltrane, Herbie Hancock and Arthur Verocai. Recorded with a minimal vintage-mic setup that lends the arrangements a live feel and warmth, it's a beautiful jazz album that blends a range of genres seamlessly: the lovely opener "Looking Up" (sample_1), the dramatic "Crossing" (sample_2) mixing spiritual jazz and soul, and "Between Spaces" (sample_3), pared down in instrumentation with a lyrical mood and gorgeously clear sound.
