Born in Cuba and of African Yoruba descent, Modesto Duran had a compositional style that blended Spanish music with African music inspired by his own roots — guaguanco-style rumba (as it's commonly classified), yuka, bembe, bata, Afro-Congo and nanigo. Gathering conga men such as Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo and Juan Cheda, who all helped bring Afro-Cuban rhythms into the jazz world, the record showcases Afro-Cuban, cha-cha and exotic jazz styles.
