From "PORTRAITS GRM," the series born out of a joint project between venerable electronic music institution EDITIONS MEGO and France's electronic music research center INA-GRM, come Flora Yin Wong, a musician with Chinese and Malaysian roots, and Sébastien Roux, an engineer who has also worked at IRCAM! Musique concrète that challenges the limits of hearing. Sine waves modulated in frequency and amplitude. Both artists use natural sounds, exploring the space between the concrete and the abstract.

A new release from PORTRAITS GRM, the series that has featured leading talents in contemporary music such as Kali Malone, Jim O'Rourke, Lucy Railton, and Laurel Halo. Flora Yin Wong, a regular on the esteemed MODERN LOVE label, drew inspiration from the bagua mirror, a Chinese feng shui mirror. Her electroacoustic work combines a wide variety of sounds—bells, the cries of crows—delivering a multifaceted sonic exploration that speaks to hearing and perception. Engineer Sébastien Roux likewise uses ocean sounds and birdsong, crafting drone electronics that explore the concrete and the abstract through a gradual modulation process. It feels like it's been a while since PORTRAITS delivered such a direct electronic music approach—this one really hits. (Original Japanese text by Akie)
